Reflecting on his 1879 sojourn in France, Mark Twain -- our most quintessentially American writer -- quipped, β€œIn Paris they simply stared when I spoke to them in French; I never did succeed in making those idiots understand their own language.”

Twain is one in a long line of Americans who have found the French to be aloof, unfriendly and rude. Is there truth in the stereotypes or do we misunderstand the French character?

Recently, a group of 12 Penn State undergraduate students, alumni and faculty traveled to Paris as part of a short course on France and the Holocaust developed by Willa Z. Silverman, associate professor of French and Jewish Studies, in conjunction with the semester-length course she teaches on "Representations of the Holocaust in French Film and Literature."
